SCIM (System for Cross-domain Identity Management) automates user lifecycle management between an enterprise identity provider and external applications. When an enterprise customer adds an employee in Okta, SCIM automatically creates them in your portal. When the employee leaves and is removed in Okta, SCIM automatically deactivates their portal access.
For B2B customer portals serving enterprise customers, SCIM is increasingly required. Without it, enterprise IT teams have to manually keep portal accounts in sync with their identity provider — a tedious and error-prone process that often leads to security gaps (ex-employees retaining portal access).
SCIM 2.0 is the current standard. See Authentication Portal for implementation patterns.
